Deferred MBA, Accelerated Access MBA, Early Career MBA, 2+2 MBA - Confirmed admissions to an MBA before graduation

Most MBA programs require applicants to have a few years of work experience to be eligible to apply. A Deferred MBA guarantees admission in a future class of the flagship MBA program before candidates acquire the requisite number of years of work experience. Unlike traditional path to the MBA, in which candidates spend 3-6 years accumulating real- world career experience before applying, deferred admissions programs offer a guaranteed place in a business school before diving into the workforce. Some top business schools have introduced a Deferred MBA admission or '2 + 2 MBA'. Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan, Stanford GSB, Wharton, Chicago Booth, Yale SOM, Columbia, Darden are few offering this program. Once accepted, these candidates start the MBA program only after having gained the minimum requirement of work experience, usually 2-5 years, followed by two years in an MBA Program.

These programs were originally designed to include more of those candidates in the MBA stream that usually don't think of applying to business school, such as STEM students. This indicates that the top MBA schools are vying to gain a competitive advantage by enrolling world class talent for the future. Those who get admits, are expected to be productively and be engaged in full-time work during the deferral period by pursuing opportunities to build expertise, enhance skills and knowledge, and develop professional judgment and self- confidence. Selection process lays emphasis on leadership potential, strong academic ability, and personal qualities and characteristics. Competition for admission through the deferred admission process is relatively higher. Partly due to the quality of applicants and the limited number of candidates that get selected through this route.
Future applications of unaccepted applicant to a deferred MBA are not disadvantaged. They can apply to the Business School again after several years of full-time work experience.

HBS 2+2 program

This is a deferred admission process for current students -Candidates apply through the 2+2 program when they are in the final year of a bachelors or Masters program. Students pursuing a joint Bachelor/Master’s Degree are eligible to apply. Masters students who have not held a full time work position (other than internships or co-ops) are eligible to apply- they should have gone directly from undergraduate to graduate school. Usually, students enrolled in PhD programs, law school or medical school are not eligible for this application, but can apply through the regular admissions process.
The admitted students spend a maximum of 4 and a minimum of 2 years in the workforce before joining an MBA cohort. When the students graduate from their ongoing programs, they get to work in any public, private, or no-profit sector for two to four years, before they join the HBS MBA program.
HBS encourages students with STEM and humanities backgrounds to apply for the HBS 2+2 program. However, students from all other disciplines are welcomed to apply for deferred MBA admission through HBS 2+2. Applicant profile s a bit more competitive than the standard pool, with an eye-popping median GMAT of 740 and a 3.76 GPA.
HBS website mentions preference to applicants who are on paths that would not typically lead to a graduate business school degree. This includes applicants who are planning to work in an operating company (tech, manufacturing, consumer goods, retail, industrials, etc.), from a lower socio-economic background (first generation in college, lower income family background, less family exposure to graduate school), wish to pursue a technically demanding role, pursuing entrepreneurship.

Students who enrolled in a law or medical graduate program direct from undergrad are also eligible. Student must select the year in which they prefer to enroll in the application form. Even if direct enrollment is requested, student could be granted deferred enrollment if Stanford feel you would better contribute, grow, and learn after gaining full-time work experience. Stanford assesses the application and decides if deferral is to be offered and for what duration .
Stanford GSB encourages students to apply for deferred admission if they feel they need to have a certain amount of work experience before they enroll in an MBA program. Some industries such as private equity, recruit only those students who have had experience in these fields before their MBA. For such applicants, a deferred MBA program can help the students fulfill the criteria for their aspired career paths.
