Study MBBS in UK - How to become a doctor in UK

Medicine is the science and practice of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, with more than 60 specialist areas. Studying medicine is a big commitment. A university level course typically requires 5-6 or more years of study, and additional training like residency, and work experience. Studying MBBS from UK Medicine can cost 30000 GBP a year. Here are the basic steps to applying to a medical course to UK:

1: Check Eligibility Requirements
The student should have completed 18 years of age before joining a degree program. Very competitive discipline and requires high grades, mainly in science subjects as well as English language. Chemistry is almost always essential and biology scores are often a mandatory requirement. Some medical colleges require you to take tests such as the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) or the Bio Medical Admissions Test (BMAT). It depends on your college which exam scores they ask for.

2: Register for BMAT or UKCAT
You must take the BMAT in the year that you are applying as BMAT scores are valid only for one year. The test is held in the first week of November, so you should register in advance. The results of the admission test will be automatically sent to the UCAS application. Followed by test and online application, eligible students, receive an invitation for the interview. While some universities conduct the online interview through skype, some universities require the students to visit the University and take an interview in person.

BIOMEDICAL TEST (BMAT)

Is a 2 hour test for medicine, veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences, dentistry Aim of the test is to gauge potential in academically demanding UG degree- very challenging test of skills and knowledge that you already have. BMAT can be taken in September of the year before application through UCAS. BMAT require GCSE std scientific knowledge unlike UKCAT. It has 3 sections:
1) Aptitude and Skills: 35 MCQ- 60 mins generic skills in problem solving, data analysis, inference
2)Scientific Knowledge and applications : 27 MCQs- 30 minutes - ability to apply scientific knowledge of school sc and maths by age 16
3) Writing Task: 1 from a choice of 4- 30 mins- ability to select, develop, organise ideas and communicate in writing concisely and precisely

UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT)

Selection of students is done by a consortium of UK Universities and Dental Colleges in partnership with Pearson Vue. The UCAT helps universities to select applicants with the most appropriate mental abilities, attitudes and professional behaviours required for new doctors and dentists to be successful in their clinical careers. It is used in collaboration with other admissions processes such as the UCAS application and academic qualifications. The test is conducted in more than 97 countries- no curriculum content. You are required to sit the UCAT 2021 if you are applying for entry in 2022 (or deferred entry in 2023) to a relevant course at a UK Consortium University or non-UK Associate Member University (see list below). The UCAT can be sat (subject to availability) between 26 July - 29 September 2021.

3: Register for IELTS Exam

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required to be taken for the purpose of getting admission into UK colleges. The exam assesses the ability of test-takers to communicate in the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. You can take IELTS exam with British Council up to once a week. The British Council for test dates is 48 days per year.

4: Documents Required

Attested copies of academic transcripts / mark sheets of class X and XII or any other diploma
Academic reference letters from professors, who have taught you most recently
If you have work experience, then letters of recommendation from the employer/manager, who can comment on your professional abilities
Statement of Purpose
Academic Resume / Student CV
Photocopied score reports of IELTS/UKCAT/BMAT
Proof of Funds / Financial Documents

5: Complete UCAS Application

Applications are made through UCAS- deadline for application through UCAS is October 15. You will be required to include a personal statement and an academic letter of reference. MBBS in UK is classified into two aspects, with respect to a graduate medical degree. Undergraduate study, a two years program Foundation training, two years program Study in UK for Indian students after 12 come with certain eligibility requirements to fulfil. Local students should get a minimum of AAA grade in science subjects.
