How an Indian MBBS can become a Medical Practitioner/Doctor in USA
The entire process of becoming a doctor in USA is 8-10 years. If you are not yet an MBBS from India, the normal process involves these 7 steps
STEP 1International students should have completed a 4 year Bachelors degree in biology, genetral chemistry, organic chemistry, or similar, before they become eligible to pursue Medical school in USA.
STEP 2Take the Medical College Admission Test® (MCAT), to determine student ability to think critically, problem solve, write clearly, as well as measure your knowledge of various scientific concepts. A good score on the MCAT is key to getting into a good medical school.
STEP 3Apply. Many publicly funded colleges are required to put part or all of their state funds towards students who are residents of the school's state. This can be a disadvantage for international students. They can apply to private universities, which are more expensive.
STEP 4Medical school typically takes 4 years to complete. The first 2 years are class room and lab work in anatomy, physiology, medical laws and ethics, microbiology, pharmacology. These classes will be classroom and lab based giving you both academic and first-hand knowledge of the human body. For example, a typical gross anatomy class will consist of a one-hour lecture followed by a lab for several hours, where you will be dissecting cadavers or animals to gain first-hand experience of what real bodies look and act like. Year 3 and 4 are clinical rotations or clerkships in different medical departments. This will allow you to learn how to interact with patients, and will allow you to see what your future career as a doctor might be like. Clinical rotations will be more and more frequent as you approach the completion of your degree.
STEP 53 to 7 year is Medical Residency, where students undergo supervised paid, on the job training in their specific field of focus. If students wish to sub-specialize they can do a fellowship, which gives 1 to 4 more years of training.
STEP 6Before being awarded the Medical Doctor degree, students are required to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) test.
STEP 7All doctors require to obtain Licensure to practice. This is obtained from jurisdiction/state in which you u want to practice. PHYSICIANS must pass the USMLE (United states Med licensing exam). Graduation from accredited med school is a pre requisite for USMLE
If you are an Indian doctor with an MBBS degrees, this is the process to follow1) Complete USMLE 1 and USMLE 2 from India and then get Visa to complete USMLE 3 (Residency) in the US.
2) Enroll for a Master’s program in the US to get a student Visa. You can prepare for USMLE 3 while completing your Masters. >
3) Once you have cleared USMLE Step 3, you can apply for residency in the hospitals.
The USMLE is a three-step examination for medical licensure in the United States.
The objective of USMLE is to access the physician’s ability to apply concepts, knowledge and principles while demonstrating patient-centered skills. The steps involved in USMLE are:
Step 1 assesses your understanding on applying important concepts of science to practice medicine with emphasis on applying mechanisms and principles involved in health, disease and treatment.
Step 2 is an evaluation to assess whether you can apply whatever you have learned – your knowledge, skills, and understanding of clinical science for patient care. Step 2 is devoted to the principles of clinical sciences and your basic patient-centered skills. It tests two skills:
Step 2 CK assesses your clinical knowledge of the physician.
Step 2 CS uses standardized patients to test medical students and graduates’ clinical skills.
Step 3 is a final assessment to evaluate how well you can apply your medical knowledge and understanding of clinical science in an unsupervised setting. It also lays emphasis on your ability to manage patients in ambulatory settings.
